Axle

Sex: Male  •   Located in: California   •   Age: Adult

*Axle is being fostered in Fresno, California.*

Meet Axle!  He’s a 9-year-old Rat Terrier filled with lots of spunk!  He is one healthy and happy dude!  As Ratties go, he is medium build, weighing 18-19 pounds.  His ears are erect and perky and his tail is docked.  He is a real good looker!  Axle recently underwent cataract surgery in his right eye.  Before the surgery, he had a hard time playing fetch and soccer, two of his favorite activities, but he can see really well now and is anxious to find a new friend to play with!   He is quite a smart fellow.  It’s obvious to his foster mom that someone has spent a lot of time training him.  He knows several commands and words that are not in a normal dog’s vocabulary.  He picks up new tricks quickly.  He is completely house broken with a doggie door, is crate-trained, and loves to go for walks on leash.  He also loves to ride in the car.  He is quite the character!  When he wants to play, he’ll start talking to whomever he wants to play with, whether it is his foster mom or dad or his canine buddies.  He gets along well with other dogs.  He also is happy to play with a toy by himself.  While he is a fully active dog, ready for any fun you want to engage in, he loves to cuddle too.  If you are happy, he is happy!  He’d love to have his own canine sister to play with.  Maybe you can be the fur ever home he’s always been looking for!

Hawk

Sex: Male  •   Located in: Texas   •   Age: Adult

*Hawk is being fostered in Garland, Texas.*

Hawk is about 4 years old, and is a handsome example of a rat terrier!  He is about 14″ at the shoulder and weighs about 18 pounds.  He’s very friendly and happily greets everyone he sees.   Hawk says riding in the car is fun, and his foster mom makes sure the window is down (and locked) 2 or 3 inches so he can smell the outside air.  He is good on a leash and and gets very excited when he sees his harness.  Hawk loves to sleep in the bed, either on top or underneath the covers, depending on the weather.  This smart guy is reliably housebroken and a doggie door champ!  Hawk is quite a talker — he grumbles and groans when he is settling down to a nap or shifting under the bedcovers at night.  ”Louie” is the name given to him by the shelter folks, but he responds to the name “Hawk.”  His foster mom thought he deserved a new name in his new life, which fits the Mohawk-like streak down the back of his neck.  Hawk likes his new name!  He has good manners, sitting quietly, waiting for his turn for treats or dinner.  He knows what a “hug” is, and will ask for one by sitting at your feet and pawing the air.  He will get onto his foster mom’s lap for short hugs, but is not a clinging vine.  He is an independent guy when it comes to the mushy stuff.  He loves to play and wrestle with his people, and has a soft mouth.  He minds well.  During a recent visit, Hawk enjoyed the grandkids (4, 7 and 9) for an afternoon of play.   He does play with other dogs, especially his rat terrier housemates.  This young man will make a fun and loving companion and an excellent watchdog.  Is he for you?  See more of Hawk in his foster home:   http://imageevent.com/ratterrierresq/louie

Jack Sparrow

Sex: Male  •   Located in: Texas   •   Age: Young

*Jack Sparrow is being fostered in Lewisville, TX.*

Introducing Jack Sparrow!  Jack Sparrow is about a year old, maybe a year and a half, and weighs around 10 pounds.  And just like any young dog, he is full of energy and loves to play!  He wakes up when the alarms go off and is ready to start his day playing.  He loves playing ball with his foster sister Darla, who is a former ResQ alumni.  Jack even liked going to the vet; it meant new people to play with!  The office staff reported that he just wanted to play, play, play, and they had a hard time watching him leave when his surgery was done.  Jack is housebroken, and is a pro at using the doggy door.  We haven’t tested him with children, but he greets visitors and new people with a friendly attitude and was not afraid of anyone, so he would probably be good with older children.  His favorite thing is his nightly massage, and he loves to be groomed with the Furminator.  Jack is very smart!  He has already learned the command of “come”, and is learning stay, sit and fetch.  Be sure and let us know if you want to make Jack a part of your family, so we can tell him to pack his bags!  This boy really deserves a home of his own, and a family who will play with him.  For more photos of this handsome young man (and videos) in his foster home, check his Image Event album here:

Scooter

Sex: Male  •   Located in: Wisconsin   •   Age: Young

*Scooter is being fostered in Kenosha, Wisconsin.*

Say hello to Scooter!  Scooter is about a year and a half old, and he’s about 13 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 15 pounds.  Scooter loves to give kisses – to any willing humans and his fellow rat terrier brothers and sister.  Scooter LOVES to play and really needs a playmate to keep him happy.  He plays nicely and does not get rough so he would not be a concern for smaller playmates.  He loves to chew on rawhides, pork skin rolls, and especially Yak chews!  If you provide him with plenty of chewies, he will be a happy boy!  He is not a picky eater and will gently take snacks from hands.  He does not like his crate and will let you know for the first 15 minutes of confinement.  After that, he will quiet down and go to sleep.  He is happiest when he gets to sleep in the doggie bed by the human bed; or at the foot of your bed, to keep your tootsies warm.  He rides very nicely in the car.  He is a little shy with new people, especially men, but will grow more confident quickly as he becomes used to a new person.  He has not shown any aggression towards any humans or other animals.  He is housebroken, and loves his doggie door.  He had shown an interest in cats but not in an aggressive way – he’s probably trying to figure out if the cat wants or needs a couple of kisses!  For more photos of Scooter, check his photo album:

Sophie

Sex: Female  •   Located in: Connecticut   •   Age: Adult

*Sophie is being fostered in Bristol, CT.*

This pretty girl is named Sophie!  Sophie is a chocolate and white Rat Terrier, and weighs about 12 pounds.  We think she is about 7 years old.  This beautiful dog is a sweet and loving girl, and you will fall in love with her quickly!   She enjoys her walks and is very good on a leash.  Sophie is housebroken, but will use a potty pad on occasion if she can’t get outside. Sophie is also crate trained. She loves to take rides in the car and sleep in bed with her people, covered with a blanket, of course!  Sophie is very people-oriented, but fast-moving kids make her nervous, so she tends to scurry away.  We think she would be fine with children over 6.  She has shown absolutely no aggression when she is nervous, she just walks around or goes to a quiet place.  Her new family will need to allow her time to get settled and learn the routine. She has not been cat scanned but we will do that soon.  If her personality is a way to judge cat tolerance, we think she would be fine with cats.  Sophie’s favorite past time is to lay in the sun and enjoy life!  She would be a devoted companion to some lucky family, could that be yours?

Lefty

Sex: Male  •   Located in: Tennessee   •   Age: Adult

*Lefty is being fostered in Portland, Tennessee.*

Lefty

Lefty is a tall standard rat terrier, weighing about 26 pounds. It’s hard to imagine, but he was a very skinny 16 pounds when he was picked up as an emaciated and neglected stray.  The shelter volunteer nick-named him “Honeybun” because that’s what they had to use to catch him.  Despite all the hardships in his short life, Lefty still loves everyone.  He likes men and women equally, and thinks he is a 10-pound lap dog!  Lefty can be a bit head-strong at times, and really needs someone with a firm hand.  A terrier-wise family would be great, because he is a big guy!  He gets along with all of the dogs in his foster home unless he is challenged, and then he will stick up for himself.   Lefty wants to please his master, and obeys commands when given authoritatively.  He is very playful and usually gets along with all of the dogs in his foster home, even the smaller dogs.  He has very long legs and loves to chase squirrels and birds in the backyard of his foster home.  Because of his prey drive, he is not good with cats.  And because he is a big boy who loves to play, he would probably be better with children over 6.  His perfect home would have a fenced backyard so he could get plenty of exercise.  We don’t think he would be a good candidate for an apartment dog.  He is crate trained (sleeps willingly in a crate) and completely housebroken with a doggie door.  He is extremely loving and affectionate, and walks great on a leash.  He also likes to ride in the car!  There’s just nothing bad to say about this wonderful guy.  For more photos of Lefty in his foster home, check his album often: http://ImageEvent.com/coram/lefty

Mattie

Sex: Female  •   Located in: Missouri   •   Age: Adult

*Mattie is being fostered in Cape Girardeau, MO.*

Mattie is a refined lady who needs a quiet home.  She is about 5 years old and weighs about 18 pounds.  Her former owner was confined to a wheelchair and Mattie was her constant companion.  Mattie has been taught to use potty pads, but has now learned the doggie door and is going outside on her own.  She walks well on a leash, and loves to sleep in her own little doggie bed on the floor.  She prefers to sleep by herself under a blanket when it’s bedtime.  Mattie would probably be fine in a crate, as long as she had her blanket with her.  She is a bit timid with children who move quickly, so we think she would do best in a quiet home, maybe with no children or older children who understand her sensitive nature.  Since she has learned to use the doggie door in her foster home, she is becoming aware that the outdoors isn’t such a scary place after all.  Even though she is mildly timid, she enjoys laying in your lap or beside you to watch television.  Mattie is uncomfortable being picked up, it is something new to her and scares her a little.  After all, her former owner was unable to pick her up.  She is not food aggressive, but does become defensive when she is chewing on a rawhide or other chew toy.  She knows how to “sit” for a treat, and wants so badly to be a good girl!  Mattie lost her home through no fault of her own, and is searching for that special owner with just a little love to give a dog named Mattie.  For more photos of Mattie in her foster home (she is camera shy) click here:

Malaya

Sex: Female  •   Located in: North Carolina   •   Age: Young

*Malaya is being fostered in Winston-Salem, NC.*

Meet Malaya!  Malaya is a precious little 11-pound Rat Terrier that melted many volunteers’ hearts when they first saw her photos and the plea for help from a shelter in Rosenberg, Texas.  ResQ immediately sprang into action to get her to safety.  She did not have much time at the high kill shelter and we had to work quickly to get her out.  An angel of a volunteer from Katy, Texas stepped up and pulled her out of the shelter for ResQ and then took her to the vet for a once-over and vaccinations.  Four days later she put Malaya on a plane from Houston, Texas, to Raleigh, North Carolina. We cannot thank our Texas angel enough!  There she was greeted by her new foster Mom and driven to Winston-Salem where she is currently being fostered.. That night Malaya got to meet her foster family of four other Rat Terriers, a Golden Retriever, 3 children and Mom and Dad . Tired from travel and a bit scared at first, Malaya sniffed her new surroundings and then started bouncing around. Her personality is super sweet and loving. This little girl would be so happy to have her forever home where she could receive lots of love and attention.  She is only about 10 months old, and just as cute as they come!  She is busy learning the routine of her foster home and the skills, like housetraining, that she will need to enjoy a new home of her own!  For more photos of this sweetie in her foster home, check her album often:

Ozzy

Sex: Male  •   Located in: New York   •   Age: Young

*Ozzy is being fostered in Mastic Beach, NY.*

Meet our nomination for the perfect puppy award! Ozzy is the sweetest, most loving and well behaved pup ever!  He is smart, a fast learner and adjusted very quickly to his foster home, mastering stairs in the house and multiple level decks outside.  Within a few days, he learned his new name.  Ozzy gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home, playing and running in the yard at warp speed.  He is very affectionate to his foster family and all ages of human and canine visitors who have come to meet him.  He loves to give kisses!  Ozzy would prefer a lap, but
is very content to snooze in the nearest doggie bed as long as it is near you.  He is playful, but not destructive.  His favorite game is to hide all the toys for safe-keeping.  He is a bit of a sock bandit, and will play with any misplaced sock he finds, but he doesn’t chew them up.  Ozzy is learning to fetch and bring the ball back, and he’s always good for a catch.  With a little coaching he will sit for a treat. Ozzy is crate trained and 90 percent house trained with a doggie door. His tail is bobbed, just barely a nub! His legs are very long, but he only weighs about 9 pounds now.  He should finish out at about 12 pounds, with erect ears and deep brown eyes you can’t resist.  Ozzy would make a great addition to a family with any age children. He is approximately 10 months old and is going to make a wonderful companion for the lucky adopter of this perfect pup.  Ozzy will be ready for his new family in a few weeks as soon as he is neutered.  For more photos of Ozzy in his foster home, check his album:

Princess

Sex: Female  •   Located in: California   •   Age: Adult

*Princess is being fostered in Sonora, CA.*

Meet Princess!  Princess is a delightful little lady, approximately 5 years old. She is petite at 11 pounds and around 11 inches tall at the shoulder. She is being fostered in Sonora CA.  This is an extra special, very sweet girl. She is calm in the house, rides nicely in the car and enjoys going for walks. She is housebroken and has no trouble with other dogs – even big ones, or cats. She has a very quiet personality, but she will alert you if someone dares to ring the doorbell.  Princess was rescued from a county animal control shelter, so her history is a mystery.  She is sensitive to movement, such as doors closing behind her and tossed toys or treats, so she would be more comfortable in a home with adults only or older children. She is very snuggly, but cautious with petting, perhaps she was not treated nicely in her former life. She is coming around now with lots of love and gentle treatment.  Like most Rat Terriers we know, Princess is very happy cuddled up next to you to watch some TV and likes to burrow under the blankets at night. Her foster siblings are not cooperative, but she would very much like to run around the yard and play with them. Princess went on her first hiking adventure recently and she loves snoozing outside in the California sunshine.  Princess is ready for her loving forever home and she will give you that love back a million times over!  For photos of Princess in her foster home, see her photo album:
